Blade II

Runtime: 117 minutes

Directed by: Guillermo del Toro

Starring: Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, Ron Perlman, Leonor Varela, Norman Reedus

From: New Line Cinema

Thankfully the stench of Blade: Trinity does not rub off on this pretty good motion picture:

Late January of this year I watched Blade for the first time in ages; I waited this long to see the second film in part because it meant I'd be closer to viewing Blade: Trinity again and cripes do I remember that being bad. That movie's stink thankfully does not rub off on II, which was del Toro's biggest hit at the time and helped him direct higher profile Hollywood pictures and eventually, allowed him to earn an Academy Award.

Some things could be nitpicked about this, admittedly. The way that Whistler was brought back: I'll attribute it to “comic book silliness.” The Scud character (played by Norman Reedus! Until recently I had no idea he was the actor in that role) is an annoying putz who apparently is “cool” because he watches The Powerpuff Girls and eats Krispy Kreme donuts... the CG hasn't always aged well and Donnie Yen was unforgivably forgettable in what was a nothing role.

Even then I will say this is pretty good as it is still an entertaining tale where The Daywalker has to team up with an elite group of vampires (although them by outfit and behavior give off the feeling of Eurotrash, which makes me chuckle) to take out a vicious enemy (The Reapers*) that goes after both humans and “bloodsuckers”.
There are exciting action scenes, cool weapons, practical effects that still look good, a rad electronic score and it is just fun watching Blade interact with the vampires. How much fun I had helped mask the weak moments. Plus, it's always nice seeing Ron Perlman. If only Trinity did not turn out to be a farce of a movie.

* Speaking of reapers, I'll mention as an aside that the Mass Effect trilogy was pretty awesome, even if how 3 ended... yes, it was appallingly bad and a massive disappointment.
