Move, you lop-eared cactus eater!

In this review (the first of three to be posted today) actually posted a few days ago on Letterboxd, I checked out this Anthony Mann/James Stewart collaboration on the Criterion Channel before it left the platform late last night. The few of the eight I’ve seen have all been rated highly by myself.

This was actually another example of Stewart being a badass; specifically, he’s a bounty hunter looking to capture Robert Ryan. The specific details won’t be provided but note that only five characters have speaking parts here: besides the two aforementioned names, there is Janet Leigh, Ralph Meeker, and Millard Mitchell. Stewart requires help to capture his quarry, who of course has attachments of his own. The fact that Ryan has a large bounty on his head which is naturally appealing to the others and there have also been "Indians" sighted in the vicinity...

The opening and closing minutes of this are great-I mean, enthralling. The rest has some incidents but much of it is fascinating characters interacting w/ each other—which was enthralling in a different way. “Psychological” is an apt term in this case. As all of this was against a backdrop of gorgeous scenery (either California or Colorado) it was a great way to spend an hour and a half.
