Mugsy's Girls

Mugsy’s Girls (1984)

Runtime: 87 minutes

Directed by: Kevin Brodie

Starring: Ruth Gordon (!?), Laura Branigan (?!?!), Joanna Dierck, James Wilder, Eddie Deezen

From: Spectrum Cinema Productions

Someone else on Letterboxd having watched this inspired me to see this bizarre oddity. After all, this 80’s T&A comedy contains the following:

* The plot revolves around a vulgar sorority house participating in a mud wrestling contest for a metric F-ton of cash.
* This is one of the last acting appearances for RUTH GORDON. Yes, the Oscar and Emmy winner who was also nominated for a Tony and is best known for classics like Rosemary’s Baby and Harold & Maude. As she also appeared in Voyage of the Rock Aliens at the time, she must have been in a Don’t Give an F point during the last few years of her life.
* LAURA BRANIGAN has a big role. Don’t ask me why, as during this time she was still a pretty popular singer and not only had Gloria just come out two years beforehand, Self Control wasn’t released as a single yet.
* Boxer Ken Norton-who once beat Ali-has a small role. So does famed boxing announcer Jimmy Lennon, Sr.
* As Steve Brodie’s son Kevin directed this, he got his dad a supporting part. Steve had been in plenty of well-known films during this career yet I remember him best for his appearance in the infamous Giant Spider Invasion and undoubtedly this was the only time he played someone named JACK ENHOFF. That tells you what sort of movie this is.

“It was the 80’s” is my hypothesis for why any of this happened, let alone all of it in an obscurity that can be best found on Tubi, a.k.a. the home of the obscurities. It’s a VHS rip but I don’t even know if someone like Vinegar Syndrome or one of what seems like 500 partner labels will bring this into the world of HD.

It’s simple: a tame distaff version of the Delta house from Animal House need cash to keep their house; what fortuitous luck then that they see an ad in the newspaper pleading for women to participate in some Las Vegas mud wrestling. They and their house mother Gordon make the trip; of course, their foes are rather obvious stereotypes and of course a promoter called Jack Enhoff is a shady SOB.

There is more padding then (possibly) in the bras of several women that appear in the film, there are plot threads that go absolutely nowhere and for its type it is quite mild. Yet, the end product is so goofy I can’t get that mad at the silly hijinks present. There’s even a pet bunny, which was included because it actually belonged to the director. If you love seeing someone strung up a flagpole, Deezen thinking a vibrator is a model rocket ship and the presence of the most generic 80’s music you’ll ever hear-none of which is from the famous singer in the cast; odd, as the movie does use a James Ingram tune-then this movie is for you, whether you know it as Delta Pi or Mugsy’s Girls.
