Yep, I'm finally reviewing this film:
Yes, I’ve seen Shrek before… albeit many years ago. I was an adult in 2001; thus, the adult humor was obvious even then. Even during those college days, my fellow mates on the dorm room floor were happy to watch the film and enjoy it. A film so popular even now doesn’t need me recounting the plot so it’s time to reveal my thoughts.
Even in 2025, Shrek the film is an entertaining tale which playfully spoofs many fairy tales; it was fun to see a literal ogre as an unwilling hero. He simply wants to be left alone… albeit because everyone assumes he’s an evil ogre upon first glance. The movie is like an onion in that it has layers. Thank heavens the movie is still a lot of fun and such elements as the pop culture references, and the mix of old & then-new songs haven’t aged poorly. Shrek’s still appealing, w/ some nice messages along the way.
It's a simple story told well; the animation is still nice, even if basic compared to the computer animation of recent years. The voice cast was a large asset; somewhere in the multiverse is Chris Farley voicing the titular character, as originally planned. Still, for all the drama Myers provides off-screen, I couldn’t imagine anyone else voicing the character. Of course, I’ve always thought that Eddie Murphy as Donkey was the highlight, constantly chatty without becoming the wrong sort of annoying. For the millions of memes that have arisen concerning the franchise, Donkey and Dragon as a couple is perhaps the wackiest-to make a presumption, that has to be the favorite element for the Tumblr crowd!
Concerning the rest of the franchise, Shrek 2 was viewed in ’04, and I was not really a fan. Thus, the rest were skipped-who knows if that’ll ever change in the future. Even a bigger mystery will be if Shrek 5 will be more than a desperate cash-grab that is pathetic compared to the 2001 original. Now, it is a relief that the OG Shrek was still a successful comedy.
