Cliffhanger

Cliffhanger (1993)

Runtime: 113 minutes

Directed by: Renny Harlin

Starring: Sly Stallone, John Lithgow, Michael Rooker, Janine Turner, Rex Linn

From: This was a multinational production but in the United States, Tri-Star released the film

There’s no better time than now to discuss this film. Those not in the know, it was announced a few days ago that this of all movies was going to be rebooted with Sly Stallone reprising his role. I’m sure it won’t be as good as this if only for how much CG crap will be present that will take the place of all the glorious practical effects the viewer saw here.

Both the Letterboxd and Netflix plot descriptions mention this plot point, so I might as well also: a tragedy happens during a still-great opening sequence. The main protagonists all deal with the ramifications of this for the rest of the film. Meanwhile, there is a plot to steal $1,000 bills from the United States Treasury plane which goes awry so it’s the villains (led by the deliciously evil John Lithgow… even if he does sport a wacky English accent) and our mountain-climbing ranger heroes attempting to find this loot in the gorgeous Rocky Mountains.

The whole thing of course is rather improbable at times and there are some silly moments. That said, this is old-school popcorn entertainment like I used to see in the day… a 90’s R-rated big-budget blockbuster with graphic violence, over the top bad guys, even more over the top bad guy deaths, giant setpieces, and all the rest. For me this was a lot of fun seeing this wild story in a lovely mountain setting-Italy mainly representing Colorado-and there are legit impressive moments which won’t be as impressive if it was replicated in the upcoming reboot. Plus, this has to be the biggest spotlight for “that guy” actor Rex Linn there ever was.

I have no idea who did this as a gag on Letterboxd but someone actually created a gag page for the reboot where they said it will be directed by Ana Lily Amirpour (!) (this is thankfully not true. Unlike most, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night was boring pretentious crap to me) and starring Jason Momoa, which I would be fine with if it actually happened.
