Yes, this was finally watched because Joe Bob Briggs played it last night, although I watched it independently of that on Arrow's streaming site. That airing gave me enough of a push to finally check out a cult classic I've known of for ages.
What a rather strange experience this entire motion picture is. After all, it's a social worker who has a case involving a grown adult man who acts like an infant... it makes canned baby sounds, wears a diaper, crawls around, and even sleeps in a giant crib. That is disturbing on its own to make your skin crawl (especially knowing that infantalism is actually a thing... yes, a few are turned on by such things!) but then there's Baby-that's the only name he has-being part of a peculiar white trash family with an awful matriarch played by Ruth Roman. There are a few gross moments never elaborated upon, Michael Pataki as a horny stoner who has some genuinely good one-liners, a party where 70's jazz is played (which matches the score sometimes), Marianna Hill, period sedans lime green in color, and quite the conclusion.
Nitpicking could be done, sure—but overall I'll say this was good. I can't say “good time” as the premise should be creepy on its own for many people. Without a doubt, the movie could have only been made in its decade & even w/ its flaws, it is something I'll never forget. The fact that this was played totally straight instead of a comedy-that alone is an important point to be stressed. Also, holy crap at this being directed by Ted Post; it was released 9 months before Magnum Force!
