“The Outfit isn't flashy, but a solid story and Mark Rylance's tightly tailored performance make this a comfortable fit for fans of old-school thrillers.” Oh, Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus...
It is true that since late January I have rarely been to the cinema; partially as a means to use my AMC A-List app and partially to get out of the house for the night, I saw what interested me from the trailer. Plus, believe it or not I haven't seen too many movies featuring Mark Rylance and this was my first Zoey Deutch; with the latter, I finally now know that she's about as cool as her mom.
Chicago, 1956: Rylance is in the world of bespoke tailoring and he runs his own shop, with the only other employee his secretary Deutch. He allows “organized crime” figures to use the back of his place as a dropbox. Is it a surprise that this would eventually become a problem and the duo would have a pretty miserable night? Now, this turned out to be one of those crime thrillers thrilled w/ twists & turns; inherently those are predicated on some things and this includes not always being the most realistic of tales-there are also benefits to the style but this wasn't the most credible plot. Also, personally I wish there would have been less F-bombs; that's just personal preference and at least the source of such foul language was a character you weren't supposed to like anyhow.
Be that as it may, this was still a cracking good time. The leads definitely helped, I enjoyed the 50's milieu where it's entirely set in one building, the supporting characters that are rather blatant stereotypes at times, the score that was occasionally jazzy, and a simply charming relationship between boss & secretary. If only this knew how to end and concluded about 5 minutes before it did...
