If only this wouldn’t have had some logical fallacies & dopey moments…
Ever since this debuted on Netflix way back when I was intrigued due to the director and the twist that this is a slasher/home invasion picture where the lead is hearing impaired and a mute. In general it’s a standard tale even if there are some atypical moments due to the heroine’s afflictions.
Of course the setting is a house out in the boonies, a wooded area away from civilization. Of course lead girl Maddie lives alone, unless you count the fluffy white cat that presumably is the same as the one seen in the director’s Doctor Sleep. And of course the villain is a goofy-looking Caucasian male who has a neck tattoo-which right there makes him a villain to me!-and wears a mask that makes me think he must have seen Eyes Without a Face before. Of course he pulls a Kylo Ren and decides he suddenly doesn’t need to have the mask on, but… it largely is what you’d expect from a premise where because of contrivances she can’t contact anyone for help and once the bro realizes she’s deaf, he decides to be like a Bond villain and troll his foe instead of just knifing her to death ASAP.
That silliness aside, at least there was enough where I can say this was good overall. The direction was solid-as was the sound design-the performances were fine from the small cast and there were tense scenes that did work as designed. While Kate Siegel as Maddie is not hearing-impaired, she is the director’s wife, co-wrote the script w/ her husband, and like I just said there are no complaints when it comes to the acting she displayed here. It was at least refreshing that Hush wasn’t based on LOUD NOISES or jump scares to make the viewer react.
